My background isn’t science, but that’s OK, because it’s inclusive and that’s the most important thing. I’ve learned about stuff I didn’t even think I was interested in, from contributions everyone has made. It’s a safe space, gives me confidence, helping me to see the world differently. You can just turn up & learn stuff, it’s great!

Do I need a science background?
No – DDOSC is for all adults, whether you have lots of science experience; or none at all. If you’re curious, interested in the world around you, and open to new ideas, this is TOTALLY the place for you! Whether you’re a civil servant, brewery worker, science technician, professor of physiology or arts graduate (like some of our current Members!) you’re very welcome here – and we ALL have something to bring. Science is for EVERYone!
I'm already so busy. What if I can't fit this in as well?
DDOSC was designed & built especially for busy adults just like you.
Most of our online resources are bite-size and on-demand, so you can dip in and out of the downloads, experiment videos and confidence-building snippets just whenever it suits you. We’ll NEVER “drown you with content” (there’s already TOO MUCH STUFF in the world). Our focus in DDOSC is the real human connection, with our secure, “tech-bro-free” Community portal where you can chat with members just like yourself.
Our Monthly Zoom Lives are specially designed to be a breather during the month. Think of that hour as a wee treat just for yourself, time out from the pressures of everyday life. Enjoy the chilled science chat with fellow Members & Guest Experts and relax together as you find your science confidence growing, then tackle the next day with renewed energy. You have access to all the REPLAYS too so don’t worry if there’s a Live you can’t make.
What if I feel out of my depth?
We ALL feel out of our depth at times. I do too!
But the good thing about DDOSC is it’s a safe space, where you can explore science topics in the company of beginners and experts alike. EVERYone has skills, knowledge and an interesting take to bring, no matter the subject of discussion. NO question is too small (or too big!), & we all learn from each other – but don’t take my word for it; here’s Therese, one of our Founding Members – “You can just turn up and learn stuff, it’s great!”
Is this like a course?
No – there is no set curriculum, no tests or deadlines, and no “homework” to submit.
BUT beware – you may find yourself looking up stuff afterwards as your interest is piqued, continuing discussions in our Community portal, and feeling a bit like a “class” as you get to know your fellow Members over time!
